If you’ve learned you are unexpectedly pregnant, you may be researching abortion as one of your options. Understanding how a medical abortion works and the risks involved can help you make an informed decision about your pregnancy.
A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, uses two drugs to end a pregnancy. LaVie Health can provide you with confidential, no-cost pregnancy services, including education about your options, so that you can feel confident and informed.
We also offer free pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds so you can learn more about how your pregnancy is progressing.

How a Medical Abortion Works
A medical abortion involves taking two drugs at different times.
The first medication, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to support a pregnancy.
The second medication, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract, resulting in significant cramping and bleeding as the uterus empties.
The FDA approves the abortion pill through ten weeks of gestation.
The Side Effects and Risks of a Medical Abortion
There are side effects and risks to consider if you decide to have a medical abortion. The main side effects of the abortion pill include cramping and bleeding, which some women report being more intense than expected.
Other side effects include: fever, chills, headaches, and nausea. Possible risks include incomplete abortion, heavy or prolonged bleeding, and infection.
Why Medical Information Matters Before Making a Pregnancy Decision
Before making a pregnancy decision, an ultrasound can provide important information about the location of the pregnancy and how far along you are, which can affect your options and help protect your health.
Around 10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can help determine whether the pregnancy appears to be developing and whether a fetal heartbeat is detected.
It is also important to know the location of the pregnancy so an ectopic pregnancy can be identified. An ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening medical emergency and cannot be treated with the abortion pill.
In our pre-abortion care at LaVie Health Clinic, we will provide accurate medical information about your pregnancy and abortion so that you can make an informed decision. Please note we do not perform or refer for abortions.
We offer both ultrasounds and STD testing and treatment to protect your health as part of this medical assessment.
