The last thing you need right now is more pressure. An unexpected pregnancy is stressful enough without adding pressure from someone else.
Your partner’s opinion is essential, but no one has the right to pressure, manipulate, or threaten you to choose an abortion. How to handle your pregnancy is a decision that is yours alone.
Take the time to learn about all your options and the best way to manage pressure from others. Share your story with a client advocate at LaVie Health. We can review your options and find a plan that helps you now and in the future.
Discover Your Options
Your partner may think abortion is the only choice you can make, but to confidently decide, you owe it to yourself to learn about all options. You have three: abortion, adoption, and parenting.
Have an Abortion
Does your partner think having an abortion will make the “problem” go away? Abortion is a major medical decision with the possibility of physical and emotional consequences. Knowing what to expect is vital.
If you’re considering using abortion drugs (the abortion pill method), learn about the limitations and qualifications. The FDA approves this method for use only through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Are you positive you know how far along you are in your pregnancy?
Some women also struggle emotionally after an abortion. Make sure you understand how abortion could affect you mentally, too.
Choosing to Parent
If your partner is pressuring you to have an abortion, he’s most likely not willing to consider parenting, but that doesn’t mean you can’t. Just because you weren’t expecting to be pregnant doesn’t make parenting impossible.
We understand that the thought of parenting can feel overwhelming. It is challenging, but it’s also the most rewarding job you could ever have.
LaVie Health offers free parenting services like classes on prenatal care, childbirth, and parenting. We’ll also provide referrals for community services to assist you. If you want to parent, our caring advocates will be there to support you.
Making an Adoption Plan
If neither of you wants to parent, but you don’t want to have an abortion, you could consider placing your child for adoption. We recognize that adoption is a difficult choice, but selecting a reputable, licensed adoption coordinator can help you determine if it’s right for you.
Here are some facts to consider when thinking about adoption:
- It costs you nothing to place a child for adoption.
- You can select the adoptive couple who will raise your child.
- You can build an ongoing relationship with your child and their adoptive family.
- All of your medical and legal expenses are covered.
- Montana law also allows for travel and temporary living expenses, as well as other reasonable costs.
- You are free to change your mind at any time until you sign legal papers.
You Don’t Have to Make This Decision Alone
A study published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons found that of the women surveyed, over 73% with a history of abortion experienced at least some form of pressure. You, sadly, aren’t alone if you are feeling this way.
No matter what you choose, a partner who pressures you is not on your side. How you handle your pregnancy is your decision, but you don’t have to make it alone. We are here for you.
