 3 Things Needed Before Abortion

With any major medical decision, like having an abortion, there are steps you must take to protect your health and safety. We recommend three steps before deciding how to handle your unplanned pregnancy.

Come to LaVie Health for the information you need. We’re here for you.

1. Get a Pre-Abortion Examination

There’s more to know about your pregnancy than a late period and a positive pregnancy test. Before scheduling an abortion, you need to learn details that protect your health and safety. LaVie Health offers no-cost pre-abortion care.

You need to get an ultrasound. An ultrasound answers the following three questions:

Is the Pregnancy Viable?

A viable pregnancy is developing with a detectable heartbeat. Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Because it takes your body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, you could get a positive pregnancy test result but no longer be pregnant.

How Far Along Is My Pregnancy?

How far along you are determines the type of abortion you qualify for. The FDA approves the use of abortion drugs (the abortion pill method) through 10 weeks of pregnancy only.
Although abortion providers may suggest using the drugs in later weeks, they become less effective the further along you are.

Is the Pregnancy Located Correctly?

Although rare, some pregnancies implant and grow outside of the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Only the uterus is meant to carry a pregnancy. Any other location can be extremely dangerous, even life-threatening.

In addition, a pre-abortion examination tests for STDs, which is another vital step.

2. Review Your Medical History

Reviewing your current medications and physical and mental health is vital before any major medical procedure. If you are considering using abortion drugs, it may not be a safe option for the following reasons:

  • You are too far along in your pregnancy.
  • You are allergic to the medications used.
  • Your pregnancy is outside of your uterus.
  • You use long-term medications for such issues as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, or eczema.
  • You have an IUD in place.
  • You have a blood clotting disorder or anemia.
  • You don’t have access to emergency care.

3. Learn About All of Your Options

Have you considered all of your options? You have three choices: have an abortion, choose to parent, or make an adoption plan. All of these are life-altering situations, but so is an unplanned pregnancy. Be sure you have considered every option before making a final decision. Ask yourself the following questions:

Do I fully understand abortion procedures, side effects, and potential risks?

Am I being pressured to make one choice over another?

Am I confident that I’m making the best decision for my future?
