If you have taken the first abortion pill and are experiencing second thoughts or uncertainty, it is normal to feel anxious or overwhelmed. In some cases, it may still be possible to attempt to continue the pregnancy by reversing the effects of the first drug, mifepristone, before the second drug is taken.
LaVie Pregnancy Care Center can help you understand what may be medically possible next and connect you with a provider who offers abortion pill reversal. We can also provide support during what can be an emotionally intense experience. Our staff offers a free, confidential, and compassionate environment focused on your health and informed choice.
Because timing matters, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible.
How the Abortion Pill Works
The abortion pill involves two drugs taken in sequence:
- Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone necessary to sustain a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy cannot continue.
- Misoprostol, typically taken 24–48 hours later, causes the uterus to contract and expel the developing pregnancy.
Intervention is only considered possible before misoprostol is taken.
What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?
Abortion pill reversal (APR) involves administering supplemental progesterone under medical supervision in an effort to counteract the effects of mifepristone. Progesterone has been used for decades in early pregnancy care, including supporting pregnancies at risk of miscarriage.
Evidence suggests that abortion pill reversal is most effective when treatment is started as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours of taking mifepristone. However, there have been documented cases in which the pregnancy continued even when treatment began up to 72 hours after taking the drug.
Reported success rates in peer-reviewed studies vary, with outcomes ranging from approximately 64 to 68%. Studies have not shown an increased risk of birth defects when treatment begins early.
